MIMCOL 'buys' resignation off its CEO

MIMCOL's Mario Mizzi, on forced leave since May pending a police investigation into allegations of corruption during the privatisation process for Malta Superyachts facility, no longer holds the position of CEO.

Il-Kulhadd reported yesterday that Mizzi accepted to tender his resignation from the government-owned company following an agreement he was forced into, by which he was given a sum of money in exchange for bowing out.

According to the weekly newspaper, MIMCOL employees were notified that Mizzi no longer occupied the CEO post earlier this week.

Mizzi investigated over allegations of corruption during the privatisation process for Malta Superyachets. In May, he was called in for questioning by Assistant Commissioner Michael Cassar, and was reportedly held for 48 hours, during which he also faced Police Commissioner John Rizzo.

At the time, senior police sources said they were investigating details mentioned in the statement given by Mizzi, and that the next step would be obtaining data from phone companies to establish contacts made with bidders.

Despite Mizzi’s resignation, the findings of the police investigation into the corruption allegations remain unknown.
