Studies show that some 80 million Europeans are living at the risk of poverty.  This is a harsh reality that is well and truly alarming.

Despite the undisputed socio-economic achievements attained in the vast majority of European society, particularly since the Second World War, it is becoming ever clear that the gains that were once taken for granted are once again under threat.

It seems as if for many the wheels of time are being turned back to the desperate times of the early industrial revolution era, so aptly depicted in the novels penned by Charles Dickens.

Although positive in many respects, globalisation can be seen to embody within it significant negative repercussions.  A case in point is in that the free movement of capital seems to have gained the upper hand on labour, with workers and their representatives having to tone down their legitimate expectations in the face of the ever present threat of capital relocation. Malta is not immune to all this.

Inspired by the European Union’s demarcation of 2010 as the European Year For Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, Fondazzjoni IDEAT has embarked upon a year-long project to shed more light on the prevailing situation in Malta.

To this end, back in April IDEAT had launched a public Call for Papers, calling upon interested academic contributors to submit their views on the subject.  The culmination of this project will be achieved next Saturday, 4th December when these opinions and findings will be presented during a National Conference on Poverty and Social Exclusion at the Le Meridien Hotel in St Julian's.  Academic Studies will be presented by Joe Gerada, Rev Charles Tabone, Dr Marvin Formosa, Dr Cyrus Vakili-Zad, Mr Robert Micallef and Dr Andrew Azzopardi.  The conference will be starting at 9am.

The public is invited to attend and actively participate during the conference. Contact: [email protected]
