Argentinean President diagnosed with thyroid cancer
Argentina’s President is diagnosed with thyroid cancer just three days before Christmas and will undergo surgery to remove the cancerous gland in the new year.
President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez, 58, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer during a routine medical exam on 22 December.
Test results showed that the cancer has remained limited to a lobe on the right side of her neck and her spokesman said that it has not spread to her lymph nodes.
Vice President Amado Boudou will run the country in Fernandez’s 20 day-leave of absence when she undergoes surgery on 4 January.
Fernandez will continue to appear in several scheduled events until her date of surgery.
According to U.S. National Institutes of Health, this type of cancer is highly survivable with 95% of patients living at least 10 years after detection but there are still risks involved during surgery.
The NIH said that a nerve which controls the vocal cords could be damaged or accidental removal of parathyroid gland may also occur.
