At least 125 people have been killed while dozens more were injured after factory fires broke out in two major cities in Pakistan.

Some of the survivors had to break through barred windows and jump to the ground to escape the fires which consumed the factories.

The survivors described how colleagues of theirs remained trapped behind blocked exits which was one reason according to fire-fighters why the fires were so deadly.

The shoe and garment factory buildings in the eastern city of Lahore and in the southern port of Karachi, respectively, both lacked clear escape routes trapping dozens inside.

Safety issues are a common problem throughout several buildings in Pakistan, also lacking alarms and sprinklers among other emergency equipment.

At least 100 people were killed at the garment factory in Karachi, the economic heart of the country.
