White House says Obama unable to meet Israeli Prime Minister
Rejecting claims that President Barack Obama refused to meet the Israeli Prime Minister amid tensions over Iran, the White House says Obama simply has no time.
The White House announced that President Barack Obama will be unable to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this month but has denied that Obama refused to meet him over tensions in Iran.
US officials told Netanyahu’s team that Obama’s schedule would not allow him to meet for talks during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Meetings between the two have taken place on all but one of Netanyahu’s US trips since 2009.
Despite Iran’s rejecting allegations that Tehran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, Netanyahu had criticised the US for not being tough enough on Iran because of this.
The Israeli Prime Minister will be meeting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton instead of Obama who is currently in the middle of an election campaign but is due to speak at the UN General Assembly on 25 September prior to Netanyahu’s address on 28 September.
