Just two days after the unveiling of a missile deal between the United States and South Korea, North Korea states that it has missiles which can strike US mainland.

In a statement, North Korean officials said that US bases in Japan, Guam and the US mainland were all in the line of fire and “scope of strike”.

North Korea’s announcement followed the South’s announcement on Sunday that the range of its own missile system would be tripled.

The North is thought to be working on a long-range missile but have not yet been successful with two rocket tests failing disappointedly.

The two failed rocket launches were said to have been related to the development of the long-range Taepodong-2 missile system which analysts believe is intended to threaten the US mainland.

Seoul (South Korea) and Washington (US) have long been in threatened in rhetoric used by North Korea but the Communist state is in possession of short to medium range missiles with artillery pointed towards South Korea.

South and North Korea have been at war since the 1950 to 1953 Korean War which ended in ceasefire. South Korea now has more than 28,000 US troops stationed providing the country with security guarantees as an ally.
