New Ebola cases falling in West Africa

Weekly UN figures show decline in new Ebola cases in the three worst affected West African countries

According to weekly figures published by the UN, Sierra Leone and Guinea both recorded the lowest weekly total of Ebola cases since last August. Liberia had its lowest weekly total since June, and it reported no new cases on two days last week.

This outbreak of Ebola had been labelled as the world’s worst outbreak of the disease. The death toll of the disease has reached 8,429 with 21, 296 so far.

The World Heath Organization’s (WHO) latest report shows that Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone now have sufficient capacity to bury all the victims of Ebola. However, it also said that under-reporting of deaths meant that not all burials had been undertaken safely.

WHO reports that although cases were falling in Sierra Leone, it remained the worst afflicted country.

Earlier this month, Anthony Branbury, the outgoing head of the UN team fighting Ebola said that he believed cases of the virus would be brought down to zero by the end of 2015.
