Nun gives birth to baby boy in Italy

South American Nun claims she had no idea she was pregnant as she gives birth to a baby boy

According to reports on the Italian newspaper Corriere Adriatico, the nun, belonging to an order in the province of Macerata in Le Marche, was admitted into hospital last Sunday due to severe stomach pains.

Doctors soon revealed that the nun, whose age has not been disclosed, was about to give birth. She gave birth to a healthy baby boy, but she is still in hospital for further tests, amid claims that the convent has expressed its interest in raising the child.

Sister Rosella Mancinelli, Mother Superior of the Monastery of cloistered nuns in the region has denied claims that the nun was a cloistered nun in the community. She defended cloistered nuns’ choice of life and said that “none of the cloistered nuns in the region had recently given birth.”

The case resembles the 2011 case in Le Marche, which led to judicial proceedings and public protests up until 2014. A 41 year old Congolese nun, who has by now renounced her vows, had given birth to a girl at a hospital in Pesaro. According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the nun had been raped by a foreign priest and did not recognize the baby at the beginning. Eventually the woman renounced her vows and was given custody of her child, and they both live in a family home to this day.
