Trade Malta, a new government authority set up to help local businesses tap into foreign markets, has hailed its business delegation to Algeria as a “success”.

“The scope of this trade mission was to strengthen trade relationships between Malta and Algeria, and to provide Malta-based companies with further opportunities to do business in this North-African market,” Trade Malta chief executive Anton Buttigieg said in a statement.

Last week’s business delegation to Algiers was led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. Foreign minister George Vella and energy minister Konrad Mizzi accompanied him, along with 30 Malta-based companies and four national institutions.

“Various sectors of the Maltese economy were represented during this delegation including companies from tourism, training and education, port services and facilities, manufacturing and information communication technology, renewable energy, construction, civil engineering and building management services,” Buttigieg said. “The institutions on this delegation covered areas of tourism management, training and education, waste management, and financial services.”

A business forum, jointly organised by TradeMalta and the Algerian Ministry of Industry and Mining was attended by over 300 delegates. The event was addressed by Muscat, Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, and a number of Algerian ministers and Maltese business associations.

The forum was followed by business-to-business meeting during which Maltese business delegates discussed potential business opportunities with their Algerian counterparts.

A seminar on the business opportunities in the tourism and construction industry in Algeria and a presentation about doing business in Algeria were also organised during this two-day visit.
