A Qrendi quarry has continued operating, even accepting construction waste, four months after its operational permit expired, ADPD chairperson Carfmel Cacopardo has claimed.

In a report submitted today to the Planning Authority, the Environment and Resources Authority, and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Cacopardo highlights the work carried out at the quarry.

The quarry, operated by Tum Invest Limited, is close to the Ħaġar Qim and Imnajdra megalithic temples in the limits of Qrendi.

In addition to listing work being carried out without a permit, the report says the quarry has expanded horizontally as well as vertically, threatening the aesthetic integrity of the megalithic temples nearby.

Cacopardo called on the authorities to to act immediately to defend the country’s heritage. “Remaining with eyes shut is no option,” he said.
