The EU and Tunisia have signed off on a comprehensive partnership package to further cooperation between the two regions.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, together with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, presided over the signing of the memorandum of understanding in Tunis.

The memorandum was signed by the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi and Secretary of State of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mounir Ben Rjiba.

The EU and Tunisia agreed to work on a comprehensive partnership package based on micro-financial support, economy, the green transition, migration and people-to-people contacts.

Among the goals of the package is the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding on renewable energy production and Tunisia’s integration in the EU’s electricity market.

It also called for the “rapid finalisation of negotiations on the ELMED interconnector between Italy and Tunisia to increase scrutiny and sustainable electricity supply and better renewables energy integration”.
