Three divers lost their lives in two separate incidents in Gozo yesterday. An Austrain national and two Britons died after encountering difficulties in the rough sea.

The public transport strike looks set to continue between 4pm and 6pm today if an agreement between the transport company and the UHM is not reached. The UHM's secretary general said that some drivers had been threatened with the loss of their job if they joined the strike. Despite the industrial action, the transport company said that the services were operating normally.

A former drug user has written to Justice Minister Owen Bonnici in a call for the review of the justice system, which he says will put him at risk for abusing again during a six-month jail term for heroin possession in 2005. Since then the man has found steady employment and gotten clean and says that prison would not help him or those like him.

Speaking at a meeting of the European People's Party in Portugal yesterday, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said that national parliaments had to become more involved and more effective in the creation of EU laws.

700 signatures have been collected in protest of the embellishment works outside Mdina. The petition calls on MEPA to take action against illegal embellishment works done earlier this year by the local council. The main source of consternation was the white gravel set down on parts of the soil in Howard gardens.
