Local council to change road-signs to allow staff to access reserved parking in Rabat

Local government secretariat intervenes to prevent industrial action over road signs preventing school staff from accessing reserved parking in Rabat

The parliamentary secretariat for local government has said that the Rabat local council would change existing road signs that were effectively denying staff members access to reserved parking spaces near St. Paul's Missionary College.

Earlier today, the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) threatened to issue industrial directives, after it said it had written to the Education and Transport ministries, as well as the local government secretariat, after teachers at the college complained about the “ridiculous situation”.

According to the MUT, Local Wardens patrolling the streets around the college, were refusing to let educators enter the school with their vehicles.

“The reason being given is that there is a no-entry sign, which sign has already been contested and which Transport Malta has already ordered its removal,” a statement by the union reads.

“However, even though both the local council and local wardens are aware of this, educators are being denied access to the school and in the process creating unnecessary inconveniences to educators and residents, who end up with at least 40 extra cars in their neighbourhood roads,” it added.

In its statement, the secretariat said that in response to these complaints, wardens had been given directions to “assist educators,” until the road signage is changed.
