[SLIDESHOW] Livestock and crafts on display as Santa Marija tradition keeps going strong

The 160th edition of ‘Wirja tal-Biedja u Snajja’- the annual Santa Marija exhibition of agriculture and craft – came to a close at Villa Rundle, Victoria, Gozo.

Organised by the Agrarian, Industrial and Cultural Society of Gozo, the exhibition is a show of appreciation towards the local agricultural sector and aims at supporting and helping farmers and traditional tradesmen. Exhibits on display this year included vegetables, livestock, farm machinery, wines, oil, honey, and artisan work.

The three-day exhibition officially dates back to 1855, when it was organised in the schoolyard of Vajringa school. However, records show that prior to 1855, a similar exhibition used to be held on the steps leading to the Cittadella.

The exhibition moved to the gardens of Villa Rundle in 1943. The show remains popular among the crowds, with over 8,500 people visiting it last year. 

The show this year included 14 categories, 105 participants and over 3,300 exhibits.

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Gozo minister Anton Refalo, and active ageing parliamentary secretary Justyne Caruana presented the trophies for the winners of each category.
