The 32-year-old Duchess of Cambridge, whose visit to Malta would have been her first official solo engagement, “didn’t want to let the Queen down” and had asked for an ambulance to be with her in order not to cancel the event.

According to The Sun newspaper, quoting Royal sources, Kate Middleton didn’t want to miss the event as Malta - a former British colony - celebrates its 50th Independence anniversary.

Middleton has been suffering from severe morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum, since announcing her pregnancy.

According to The Sun, Middleton was keen to attend the planned engagement, but despite her best efforts, it transpired not to be possible. “Kate didn’t want to let the Queen down,” a Royal source told The Sun.

Prince William, who’s replacing his wife, will be arriving to Malta today. His official programme will kick off at 3.40pm with a meeting with Malta’s President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and tree-planting at San Anton Palace.
