Valletta’s history shines in new docudrama

A tourist-friendly docudrama has just been launched at the Embassy Cinemas, Valletta, as HD Entertainment’s Valletta Living History compresses the city’s beleaguered history in a 35 minute feature spanning from the arrival of the first settlers, down to to its heroic role in World War II right up to present day.

However, a substantial chunk of the film – written by acclaimed script writer Jonathan Rich and directed by well known local artist and director Vince Briffa, who had previously helmed Great Siege 1565 – is dedicated to a sumptuous re-enactment of the Great Siege, which highlights the production’s high-standard production value in its evocation of the period and execution of battle scenes.

While acknowledging the production’s role as first and foremost a tourist product, director of HD Entertainment John Soler, speaking at the film’s official launch last Thursday, stressed that the film can also be appreciated by locals since it highlights key moments in history that contributed to the shaping of the Valletta we know today. This was corroborated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi’s closing speech at the event, during which he expressed pride at seeing Valletta’s history told through a high-definition film, while also making reference to changes that the city will be experiencing over the coming months.

Valletta Living History is shown daily at the Embassy Cinemas during following times: 09:30, 10:15, 11:00, 11:45,13:30, 13:15, 14:00 and 14:45. Tickets are at €9.75 for adults, €4 for children. More information from http://www.maltaattraction.com.
