Strategy will map out ways Artificial Intelligence can be put to use in Malta

Digital innovation minister Silvio Schembri: ‘We want to put Malta among the top 10 in the world for AI policies’

A workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expected to provide the outcome of discussions the Malta.AI Taskforce has had since its launch, parliamentary secretary Silvio Schembri announced.

Addressing the Artificial Intelligence in Gaming conference organised by Nouv and Tomobox in collaboration with Microsoft and SIGMA at the Microsoft Innovation Centre, Schembri invited experts to be part of this public consultation.

“The public consultation workshop by the Malta.AI Taskforce will provide a better picture of where the strategy is heading and which are the identified pillars that will be focused upon.”

Schembri said the strategy will eventually develop cutting edge use-cases of how AI could be deployed in Malta and understand better how it can be applied by government to further improve the services given to the citizens.

The drafting of a national AI strategy will be in the hands of the Malta.AI Taskforce, which will then be implemented by the newly established Malta Digital Innovation Authority, recently entrusted with regulation of DLT products and services.

“Our aim is to put Malta amongst the top 10 countries in the world with an Artificial Intelligence Policy,” Schembri said. “The ambitious vision that we have prioritises the importance of discussion on the subject, builds awareness of the key topics and issues that will inform a national AI framework, and identifies regulatory and fiscal measures to strengthen Malta’s appeal as a hub for foreign investment in this sector, as well as identifies the underlying skill base and infrastructure needed to support AI.”
