Throughout the trial period, all Melita customers and non-customers can avail themselves of free internet while in the Paceville area through any Wi-Fi enabled device.

In a recent interview, Melita's CEO Andrei Torriani said that the free Wi-Fi trials will enable potential and existing customers to test fibre power 'in the air'.

"Melita's initiative will allow people using smartphones and tablets in bars and cafes - particularly during the day - the quality service and signal strength generated by the fibre power network Melita rolled out last June. There is a pent-up demand for higher speeds in Malta and fibre power delivers speed and service," Torriani said. "This is a natural extension of the success Melita has enjoyed since we rolled out the network. In just five months, the customer base of our 10 megabit service grew from 10 to 25 per cent."

The free Wi-Fi service is easy to access. When in the Paceville area, users need a 3G mobile phone to complete a one-time registration process. Scan for Wi-Fi networks and choose the network "M FREE Wi-Fi".

Users will be requested to enter their mobile number. An instant SMS will be sent to that mobile number with a registration code. Enter this number in the login screen on your phone's web browser, and you are ready to browse the world wide web for free.

This free broadband service can be used through any device able to access Wi-Fi.

For the trial period, the service is currently available in selected areas of Paceville: Xatt Ta' San Gorg, Triq Santu Wistin, Triq Santa Rita, Triq San Gorg, parts of Triq Elija Zammit, parts of Triq Id-Dragunara, Triq Il-Wilga and Triq Ball.

International independent broadband monitor www.netindex.com has confirmed Melita as the fast broadband internet service provider in Malta with an average download speed of 19 Megabits per second - ahead of the EU average of 13.5 Megabits per second.

Netindex.com has also ranked Melita ahead of European powerhouses such as Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and the UK in delivering the promised download speeds, with a 95.38% score. The European average stands at 85.28%.

Melita's Wi-Fi trial project is underway with the collaboration of industry leaders Motorola, Belair and Aptilo.
