Man apologises to police after resisting arrest when drunk
A 25 year-old man has apologised to police and admitted to charges of violently resisting arrest when causing a disturbance after being kicked out of a bar in St. Julian’s.
Matthew Bugeja, 25 of Dingli admitted to having caused slight injuries to two police officers, and having violently resisted arrest in the early hours of Sunday, after bouncers kicked him out of Ryan's Pub in St. Julian's.
Lawyer Patrick Valentino, who appeared for Bugeja, said that his client was sorry for what happened, and had apologised to the police for his actions.
Valentino argued that his client was very drunk when police approached him.
While entering a guilty plea, prosecuting Inspector Daryl Borg told Magistrate Gabriella Vella that one of the officers who suffered an injury during the scuffle with Bugeja, has still not returned to work.
He explained that Bugeja was politely told to go home after he was taken to St. Julian's police station, but reacted by slamming his fist on the station's counter and slamming the main door when leaving.
He was stopped by four officers who had to restrain him in a bid to handcuff him.
Bugeja, who works as a deliveryman, was granted bail until sentencing on Thursday.
He was ordered to be home by midnight between today and tomorrow, and to sign at a police station tomorrow.
He was also ordered to sign a personal guarantee of €1,000.
