Police investigating spate of robberies in Sliema, Swieqi areas

One man was injured in the first of three robberies that took place last night

A man was grievously injured yesterday after he tried to stop a hooded robber in his apartment building.

The incident was one of three robberies that took place last night that are being investigated by police.

It is understood that the man, aged 50, from Serbia, opened the door to his apartment building after hearing a knock at about 8pm. He came face-to-face with the knife-wielding assailant, who threatened him and demanded money. When the victim resisted, a scuffle ensued and the thief fled after injuring the man.

Minutes later, the District Police were informed that a person fitting the robber's description had robbed an elderly woman, 73, of some cash in Triq San Ġwann Bosco, Sliema. She too reportedly tried to resist the thief.

Meanwhile, at about 9.15 p.m., a similar robbery was also reported, this time by a woman, 55, who was robbed of her belongings in Triq is-Swieqi, Swieqi.

No injuries were reported in the last two cases.
