No bail for Libyan charged with punching policeman in the face

The 28-year-old was caught attempting to steal a mobile phone by the undercover policeman

A 28-year-old Libyan resident of Msida has been charged with attacking and injuring a police officer who caught him red-handed, trying to steal a mobile phone on Sunday morning

Mugzazi Khaled denied assaulting and injuring the undercover police constable, who caught him red-handed as he tried to take the mobile phone from a woman’s handbag inside a Paceville nightclub in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Inspector Elton Taliana told the court, presided by Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras, that the accused had punched the constable in the face in a bid to get away after the officer had identified himself.

The officer was certified to have suffered slight injuries.

Lawyer Abigail Bugeja, appearing for the accused, did not request bail.
