Pro and Anti divorce movements barred from referendum proceedings

Amendments to Malta’s Referendum Act made in 2002, just a year before the EU referendum, grant only the Nationalist andLabour parties freedom to be part of referendum preparation and overseeing.

Despite being active and central campaigners – with more prominence than the PN or the PL - in the Divorce debate, Moviment Iva and Zwieg Bla Divorzju cannot be part of the referendum preparation and proceedings.

This means that they will not be able to nominate Assistant Commissioners of their own, or be part of briefings from the Electoral Commission relating to the referendum process, unlike the represented political parties.
