GWU negotiates collective agreement with foreign embassy in Malta

General Workers’ Union (GWU) signs collective agreement with the British High Commission, marking the first trade union to ever sign such agreement with a foreign embassy in Malta.

British High Commission employees in Malta will be benefitting from the first Collective Agreement negotiated and signed on their behalf by the GWU’s Professionals, Finance and Services Section. This collective agreement is the first ever that has been negotiated with a foreign embassy in Malta.

This collective agreement builds on various aspects of industrial relations and includes a new system of pay rises and other financial benefits, consolidates the working conditions of the employees and also establishes the procedures and processes dealing with grievances.

Apart from being the first ever collective agreement reached with a foreign embassy, this agreement officially conjoins the interests, rights and obligations of diplomatic corp. employees. It is also an expressions that embassy employees are not precluded from joining a trade union to protect and improve their working conditions.

Professionals, Finances and Services Section secretary Cory Greenland expressed his satisfaction that the GWU was the first union in Malta to successfully sign a collective agreement with a foreign embassy.

“The GWU is now in a position to work in favour of foreign embassy employees and therefore urges such employees to come forward and seek GWU membership,” Greenland said.
