Health warning - ‘Halva with Pistacchio Nuts’ not to be consumed

Health Directorate says Turkish product ’Halva with Pistacchio Nuts’ should not be consumed due to excessive presence of toxins directly linked to cancer.

After receiving information from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed, the Environment Health Directorate informed the public to avoid consuming Turkish product ’Halva with Pistacchio Nuts’ as a precaution.

The information received said that the Baktat branded product has been found to have an excessive presence of aflatoxins.

Aflatoxins are naturally produced by a fungus and no animal species is immune to the toxic effects when exposed to excessive amounts.

Although humans have a tolerance to small aflatoxin amounts, it has been directly linked to causing cancer when exposed in excessive amounts.

Children can experience stunted growth and delayed development if exposed to aflatoxin.
