Prime Minister asks Commissioner of Police to investigate Nationalist MP

Allegations of football bribery taken to Commissioner of Police for investigation.

The Prime Minister has asked the Commissioner of Police John Rizzo to investigate allegations about a ‘fund’ allegedly use to bribe footballers.

MaltaToday is informed that after Lawrence Gonzi was sent questions by this newspaper about his knowledge of how these allegations were connected to one of his MPs and whether he was aware of them, the prime minister took the matter to the Police for investigation.

The Prime Minister has denied any knowledge of the matter.

Despite the fact that MaltaToday asked that the questions, sent by email, be not divulged to third parties, the prime minister informed this newspaper that the email had been sent to the Police for immediate investigation.

This newspaper is informed the prime minister did not call for the MP to explain their side of the story.

On Friday, MaltaToday also contacted the MP to comment on the existence of a fund that was used to bribe football players. He denied any knowledge of the matter and categorically denied his involvement in any match-rigging allegations.

He said this was an attempt by someone to damage his reputation.

This story appeared on MaltaToday on Sunday.

I do not understand how this system works in Malta. Please explain. Why does ANYONE have to go to the Police before they take action?(Assuming the case or allegations is in the public domain) Why does the police "investigate" these things when there is a CORRUPTION Agency.? What does it do and when? I ask as even when an allegation is made in Parliament - so it can hardly be said it's not public- the answer is WHY DIDN"T YOU REPORT IT TO POLICE SO THEY can INVESTIGATE? How ridiculous! The whole thing looks like it is used by whomever it suits for their ends. It's not an open and accountable system desigend to really and truly keep corruption in check. How Maltese. Appearences is what really matters!!!

On this occasion, the PM acted very correctly. Did Maltatoday actually expect the PM to be informed of serious allegations of wrong-doing by a Member of Parliament and not inform the Police?
