Labour MP turns out to be architect of ‘inconvenient roadworks’

After Labour criticism of roadworks, Austin Gatt says Labour MP is chief architect of Council of Europe and Garibaldi roadworks.

Labour MP Charles Buhagiar is the chief architect of roadworks being carried out on Council of Europe Avenue and Garibaldi Road, but the party has made no mention of this fact in its criticism of ongoing roadworks, the transport ministry said in a statement.

“Charles Buhagiar is responsible for the planning of traffic management during these works. One hopes Labour is not about to say that Buhagiar cannot plan the works,” transport minister Austin Gatt said.

Gatt said Labour was exploiting the inconvenience generated by the construction of new roads, a €40 million project part-financed by the EU that have been ongoing for the past six months.

Gatt said Transport Malta provided diversion routes at substantial expense after conducting traffic studies. “Either way, no planning ahead would quell the opportunistic criticism of Labour,” Gatt said.

i don't think that the architect decides when works start. bit of an over-stretched argument there, sorry Government, this does not help you. Let's try a bit harder next time please.

What would the architect have to do with planning the reroutes and diversions, he designs the new road and makes sure the work is done properly, the other stuff is done by other officials, does Gatt and co really think we are stupid, but then again the blue eyed boys are i guess for beliveing in Gonzi pn.

this guy obviously never learns! the architect employed reports to someone who reports to Austin gatt!!

Is Austin Gatt trying to justify all the mess created in the public transport since Arriva took over, by mentioned a Labour MP who happens to be an architect? He must remember that the minister is ACCOUNTABLE and RESPONSABILE for Transport Malta, and not anybody from the opposition. With this statement, Dr. Gatt is showing that he and his government are with their back against the wall! If he resigns tommorrow, all Malta and Gozo will start going to sleep safely, at last! What's going on in Malta, is not what happens elsewhere in the EU. All this hypocrisy from the government after getting us into the EU, and instead of practicing democracy, the government is acting just like a dictator.

I believe there is a difference between designing a road and building it when any day you only see 2 or 3 workers doing any work on the mentioned road. The architect ihas nothing to do with the pace the contractor oes his work it is the ministry's responsability to see that the construction is done on time. By mentioning Mr Buhagiar as if to make him part of the equation does not hold any water, it is the same like a consultant suggests some medication but it is up to the nursing staff to see it is administeredon time and in the proper dose.
