In an interview appearing in tomorrow’s edition of MaltaToday, Nationalist backbencher Michael Gonzi says he has a clean conscience when it comes to certain decisions made throughout his time in parliament but would never refrain from expressing any disagreements.

“Although I did not exclude the introduction of divorce at some later stage, I felt that not enough had been done to safeguard the family. I always believed that what the people say is sacrosanct,” Gonzi said.

However, the moment the country spoke in a referendum, he felt duty bound to respect the will of the majority.

Gonzi says he always felt he should either respect the will of the people with his vote or resign, but defends his brother Lawrence Gonzi’s vote as “a vote of a father”.
