Malta accedes to joint convention on safety of spent fuel management

Malta accepted the amendment of the convention on physical protection of nuclear material and acceded to the joint convention on the safety of spent fuel management.

Ambassador Keith Azzopardi has deposited two instruments of accession to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Malta.

The instruments represented acceptance by Malta to the Amendment of the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and accession to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management.

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the IAEA deposited these two instruments directly with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano during the IAEA Treaty Event that took place on the margins of the annual IAEA General Conference, to which Malta also participated.

Amano warmly welcomed Malta's accession to the two Conventions, saying that Malta was the sixty-ninth country to ratify the Amendment to the CPPNM, moving ever closer to the amended Convention's entry into force.
