Man critical after Zejtun garage blaze

A 42 year-old man from Marsascala is in a critical condition and in imminent danger of dying after suffering extensive burns and inhaled smoke in a fire that engulfed a garage he was working in.

The incident happened at 2pm in Bir id-Deheb Road, Zejtun, when the man - identified as Louis Baldacchino, an electronics engineer -  was reportedly trapped inside the garage that caught fire.

Police sources said that the fire developed while the man was welding steel bars together as he was fixing a dinghi.

Fire fighters were called to the scene, while an ambulance transported the injured man to Mater Dei Hospital.

An inquiry led by Magistrate Miriam Hayman is underway.
