Majority of electorate prefers different elections to be held on same day

Illum newspaper reports that 64% of the surveyed electorate in favour of having elections for the European Parliament and local councils held on the same day

The majority of the electorate interviewed in a survey agree that elections for the European Parliament and local councils should be held on the same day, Sunday newspaper Illum reports.

Last May’s European Parliament elections registered a lower turnout than usual, prompting Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to suggest that EP elections should be held with local council elections. According to the PM, this would save the country time and money since in less than a year, the country will once again be asked to go to the polls for the 2015 council elections.

The survey quoted by Illum was carried out in the last days of June among 583 respondents, aged between 16 and 75. 64% of the respondents said they were in favour of combining elections of 2019. 24% oppose the idea.

Asked whether they planned on voting in next year’s local council elections, 57% said they will while 30% said probably. 8% said they will not be voting.
