Plans to build three wind farms have been scrapped as the government turns its focus on solar energy to meet its 2020 energy targets. The plans for the wind farms were abandoned after research showed that significant environmental impact was unavoidable.

The presence of asbestos and the structural instability of the old Dowty factory in Mriehel should have prompted the police to stop the filming of the Winter Moods music video in May. However, the police allowed filming to continue, despite not having issued a permit for the activity.

Malta would need 2.7 square kilometres of solar panels to meet its energy targets. 10% of Malta's energy requirements have to be met using renewable energy by 2020. So far, 72 applications to create solar farms have been received.

A 2013 Ombudsman case showed that a clean-up of San Blas bay in Gozo, which endangered the protected status of the beach, was a result of the interests of a person or persons with a vested interest in having the beach cleared.
