Left wing Zminijietna has expressed concern at the “inferior working conditions” that childcarers are experiencing.

“Although the government’s provision for universal childcare services was a big step forward, conditions of employment need to improve and further regulation is needed,” Zminijietna spokesman David Pisani said.

In January, the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) expressed concern at the employment conditions of childcarers, and warned that as a result, childcarers are seeking better jobs elsewhere, a move which could to a possible shortage.

“Zminijietna is highly concerned with the inferior conditions of employment that the workers in this sector find themselves in. Childcarers are receiving low wages and are working in precarious conditions, both in the public and the private sector.”

The left-wing think tank also argued that the wages of childcarers should increase to reflect the high level of responsibility that childcarers have in the education of children.

"Unionisation of childcarers should also be ensured without delay. Żminijietna supports MUT in its struggle to organize this sector and to improve the conditions of work. Workers should be allowed to choose full-time employment".
