The national flood relief project in Birkirkara will be completed by the end of this year.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi made the annoucement during a visit to the flood relief project in Zonqor, Marsascala.

Mizzi, together with Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg, explained that the tunnel carries water to the sea or to a reservoir which can hold up to 60,000 cubic metres of water.

The project in Marsascala cost €7.9 million, 85% of which were funds contributed by the European Union. The part in Zonqor will help in the flood relief in Marscala and Zabbar.

Borg said that the reservoir can save up to 60,000 cubic metres of water that can be used for the irrigation of the valley in Marsascala.

Mizzi confirmed that the flood relief project in Birkirkara will be complete by the end of this year. The works in this locality were delayed because of complications that arose in Iklin and Lija.

The project, which started in April 2013, had encountered obstacles. Mizzi said that the workers encountered numerous problems, mostly related to the very hard rock found during the digging process.

Mizzi said that maintenance is another big headache for the ministry and added that a team will be set up to take care of this issue.
