Works on Guze Ellul Mercer bridge to be conducted shortly
Transport Malta yesterday received the condition report on the Guże Ellul Mercer Bridge.
Following a Ministerial Directive, Transort Malta had, in January, commissioned a structural engineer to draw up a report on the condition of the bridge railings and provide recommendations on repair works.
The report specifies that the bridge parapet walls have experienced corrosion damage and recommends that the bridge walls be removed and replaced by a properly designed metal vehicle restraint system to provide an adequate level of containment.
The report also recommends the opening up of the expansion joints, the removal of the current installations and the installation of new proprietary expansion joints with the road surface on either side being properly finished using asphalt or reinforced concrete.
Transport Malta will be taking the report’s recommendations on board and will be drawing up an estimate of the costs involved. The works will be carried out shortly.
