The number of people with a disability has almost doubled since 2013, figures tabled in parliament show.

The statistics were provided by Employment Minister Evarist Bartolo in response to a question by government whip Byron Camilleri.

Bartolo said that according to Jobsplus, the number had steadily increased from 1,797 by the end of 2013 to 3,508 as of October of last year.

In recent years, the government has implemented a number of measures aimed at facilitating people with a disability joining the workforce.

In fact, as of 2015, at least 2% of employees in companies employing more than 20 people, must be persons with a disability.
