Greek finance minister against euro referendum

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said he did not agree with his Prime Minister’s plan to hold a referendum on whether the Greeks should stay in the eurozone or not.

Returning from the G20 meetings in Cannes, the Greek Finance Minister said: “Greece's place in the euro is a historical conquest by the Greek people that cannot be placed in question...this cannot be made dependent on a referendum.”

The Associated Press reports that these comments could fuel the possibility that Prime Minister George Papandreou tomorrow loses a no-confidence vote.

In comments to the press, Papandreou had said that the referendum would be about whether the Greeks want to stay in the eurozone or not, adding that the Greeks wanted to stay in the euro.

Greece has so far received billions in bailout from the euro member states, with the condition that Greece tightens its austerity measures. The Greeks have since been protesting against their government for the tight measures.
