Rio summit still lacking after two decades
The Rio summit declaration considered ‘lacking’ as environment groups say leadership failed to stimulate a greener economy for sustainable development.
Clean energy issues were discussed during the final phase of the Rio summit which also saw pledges being made from countries and companies toward alternative energy.
However, environment groups have been joined by a number of veteran politicians in saying that the summit declaration was an instance of failed leadership while the outcome was described by UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg as bland.
Marking 20 years since the Earth Summit in Rio and 40 since the first global environment meeting held in Stockholm, the goal of the meeting was to stimulate a greener economy.
The green economy is being considered just one possible pathway to sustainable development in the declaration that was finalised by negotiators earlier this week.
Ministers, however, have not attempted to re-open or discuss despite many considering the declaration to be lacking.
United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon urged governments to eliminate world hunger on the final day of the UN sustainable development summit in Rio.
Ban Ki-moon said that no one should go hungry since the world is one of plenty.
