Australia and Indonesia search for missing 90 men at sea
Australian and Indonesian ships search for some 90 men after fishing boat capsizes as it was carrying around 200 suspected asylum seekers.
Around 90 men are still missing after a fishing boat capsized in rough seas near Christmas Island as it was carrying some 200 suspected asylum seekers toward Australia.
Ships and aircraft from Indonesia and Australia have been prompted to join in the search in two-metre (7ft) swells as all 90 men have been missing since Thursday evening.
The Australian maritime safety authority said that four Indonesian and Australian warships, together with four merchant ships and five Australian government aircraft, have all been deployed.
Some 110 survivors were rescued by an Australian navy patrol boat and three cargo ships late on Thursday and were delivered to Christmas Island, while three bodies were also recovered.
According to a spokesperson from the maritime safety authority, details of the passengers’ origin were not clear but most asylum seekers trying to reach Australia usually originate from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran or Sri Lanka in an attempt to escape from violence and poverty.
