Aleppo, Syria’s most populous city, has seen extreme Syria government forces battle rebels using shelling and helicopter guns.

Although tens of thousands of people have managed to flee the country in pickups and cars, not everyone has been able to leave as thousands remain trapped.

Aid workers say they fear humanitarian catastrophe as bread is in short supply and fuels become too expensive for many people to afford.

Schools, parks and dormitories have been turned into makeshift shelters for those who have fled battle-zone districts as volunteers struggle to provide food and water.

Tanks are said to be positioned on the city’s outskirts by the government and the battle is expected to increase as government forces have yet to use their full power to regain control over the city.

Analysts say President Bashar al-Assad cannot afford to lose Aleppo as its streets and alleyways become the scene of intense battles as the fighting becomes more concentrated in a semi-circle of districts seized by rebels.

Three police stations were seized by rebel fighters on Tuesday despite major losses, but some areas of Aleppo, have been spared gruesome scenes of death and seen many people arrive from other districts.
