Luton airport evacuated following dicovery of suspicious object

Passengers have been evacuated from London Luton Airport after a "suspect package" was found.

The terminal building at Luton Airport, north of London, has been evacuated after a suspicious item was found, the police and airport said on Monday.

Bedfordshire Police said the terminal had been evacuated while the package was being examined. All incoming flights have been suspended and passengers are being advised to contact their airlines.

"London Luton Airport has evacuated the terminal building after a suspicious item was found in the security search area. The decision has been taken with the police to ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff," Luton Airport said on their website.

The airport said: "We understand passengers will be frustrated by the delays they are experiencing.

"We are working closely with the police to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced unnecessarily but we must ensure that the safety and security of all our passengers and staff remains our top priority."

The country's sixth biggest airport airport said all incoming flights had been suspended and the approach road to the airport had been closed.

Britain recently raised its international terrorism alert to its second-highest level, saying Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria and Iraq posed the country's greatest-ever security risk.
