Italy set to ban plastic bags in shops
A ban on plastic bags is set to come into effect tomorrow 1 in Italy which is one of Europe’s highest consumers of plastic bags.
The ban, which comes into effect on 1 January 2010 will see the removal of plastic bags from shops and only biodegradable or paper bags will be used.
Italy is the highest consumer of plastic bags in Europe going through 200 billion plastic bags a year or 300 per person.
A law for a gradual ban on plastic bags was introduced in 2006. The complete ban was set to be imposed in January 2010 but was opposed by the industry.
