Ghana triumph in extra time to reach quarters for the first time in history

An extra time winner by Gyan was enough for Ghana who overcame a stiff challenge from the United States to set up a quarter final meeting with Uruguay.

Ghana had taken the lead on 5 minutes through a fine low shot by Kevin Prince Boateng. The United States equalized on 62 minutes through a penalty converted by Landon Donovan.

The two teams had to go to extra time at the Royal Bafekong Stadium in Rustenburg, North Western Province but it was Asamoah Gyan who scored for Ghana on 95 minutes to put them 2-1 up and claim victory.
