A 43-year-old man from Xaghra is to be arraigned this afternoon over the attempted murder of his former partner yesterday.

The incident occurred yesterday morning at around 7.20am in Triq Guzeppi Grech, Xaghra, when the man stabbed his former partner, Silvia Zammit, in the head with a six-inch screwdriver.

The victim, 48, a mother of a 10-year-old boy, is in danger of dying.

Sources told MaltaToday that Zammit’s estranged partner had stormed into her apartment in Xaghra after breaking down the door. The woman called the parish priest for help, who in turn contacted the police.

An argument ensued between the woman and her former partner, who then stabbed Silvia Zammit in the neck behind her ears with a six-inch screwdriver.

The victim was then brought to Malta from Gozo by a helicopter and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where she was certified to be in danger of dying.

MaltaToday is informed that the man fled from the crime scene with the couple’s 10-year-old son.

Hiding at a bus stop, the attacker was then arrested by the police when mobile squad officers noticed the man accompanying a small who was not wearing any shoes. Upon noticing the approaching police car, the man attempted to hide behind the bus stop, but police noticed that the man’s hands and clothes were covered in blood.

He was then arrested and taken into police custody.

The 43-year-old will be arraigned at the Gozo Law courts this afternoon at around 5pm.
