Police officers were stationed outside the office of the Public Works Department in Gozo and outside the Gozo Ministry yesterday, sources report

MaltaToday can report that police are currently questioning government officials in relation to a report published yesterday by the newspaper.

Unusual police activity was noticed outside the Gozo’s branch of the Public Works Department in Victoria yesterday afternoon, according to sources. MaltaToday is informed that the police have sealed the premises to ensure that no documents or materials are moved out of the office or garage belonging to the Public Works.

According to witnesses, a number of government officials and police officers were seen entering the office in Triq il-Kappuccini. A police officer is currently stationed outside the office.

The sources also reported the presence of police officers outside the Gozo Ministry in Pjazza San Frangisk.

The unusual activity follows an exclusive MaltaToday report revealing how Gozo constituents were offered free construction, paid by the ministry under the previous administration.

MaltaToday on Sunday reported how a Gozitan whistleblower came forward to reveal a devious scheme to provide construction work done for free for constituents in Gozo, targeting potential voters of former Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono. The scheme was coordinated by her husband, Anthony.

Anthony Debono yesterday refused to answer questions when contacted. Giovanna Debono, told about the matter, said it was the first time she was hearing about it and that she had no knowledge of it and therefore she could not comment.

In a statement, the Labour Party accused Opposition leader Simon Busuttil of remaining silent over the case.

“Yesterday, Busuttil said that it only took him five seconds to decide to suspend Michael Falzon and Ninu Zammit,” the PL said, referring to two former Nationalist ministers who were found to have held secret Swiss bank accounts. “However, 100,000 seconds have passed [since the Debono story broke] and Busuttil hasn’t yet said what action he will take against Giovanna Debono.”
