Policeman, youth seriously injured in Tal-Barrani crash

Two drivers seriously injured after two vehicles crash head-on in Tal-Barrani Road

Two drivers were seriously injured in a crash involving three cars at Tal-Barrani Road in Santa Lucija yesterday evening.

The incident occurred at about 9:15pm when a Toyota Vits driven by a 45-year-old man residing in St Julian’s and a Honda Prelude driven by a 23-year-old from Zabbar crashed as they driving towards Zejtun.

Upon impact, the Honda veered off the centre strip into the path of an Opel Corsa coming from the opposite direction. The two vehicles then crashed head on and the Opel Corsa crashed into a nearby tree.

The two drivers were trapped in their cars and were freed by members of the Civil Protection Department. The drivers were then hospitalised. The Opel’s driver, Anthony Dimech – a 26-year-old policeman from Mgarr – suffered injuries to his back, pelvis, and legs. He was initially certified as suffering from critical injuries but he was later certified as being in a stable condition.

The Honda’s driver, Karol Grech, also suffered critical injuries but is in a stable condition. Grech’s passenger, 21-year-old Mario Bianco, suffered slight injuries, while the couple who were in the Vitz were unhurt.

An inquiry is being held.
