Mater Dei calls on former minister’s wife to settle hospital fees

Manuel Mallia’s wife says bank account wrongfully debited

The wife of former home affairs minister Manuel Mallia is being called to settle an outstanding health bill by the government’s principal doctor, a court application reads.

Elena Codruta has submitted to the courts that her bank account was wrongfully debited from the funds, and says she is not the client being called to pay the outstanding Mater Dei fees.

The hospital called on Elena Codruta Cristian to pay €3,657.11 in outstanding bills for health services from Mater Dei Hospital claimed between 16 December 2008 and 21 December 2008.

The first judicial application calling on her to settle the bill was in July 2009. In 2012, Lombard Bank complied with a request to pay out the sum of €2,221 from Codruta’s bank account.

Codruta is contesting the withdrawal of funds, presenting a copy of her passport to claim that the person being called to pay the bill does not bear her name ‘Elena Codruta Cristian’.
