Five persons were injured in a traffic accident on the Coast Road, near the Pembroke exit, earlier today.

The accident, which happened at about 8am, appears to have been a head-on collision between a southbound and northbound vehicle.

A Honda Civic, being driven in the direction of St Paul's Bay by an 18-year-old Mosta youth, collided with a Volkswagen Golf being driven in the opposite direction by a 20-year-old man from Mosta.

There were two passengers in the Honda -  two women, one aged 20, from St Paul’s Bay, the other aged 17, from Naxxar.

There was also a female passenger in the Volkswagen, aged 31, from Mellieha.

Those involoved in the accident were taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where the Honda Civic driver and passengers were certified as suffering from grevious injuries, while those in the Volkswagen Golf, also suffered slight injuries.

The road was closed off to motorists from both sides, who had to use the Pembroke side-roads to proceed to St Julian's and a long traffic jam was built up.
