Prison inmate Melchior Spiteri is calling on Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who is politically responsible for the Corradino Corrective Facility, to undertake an inquiry into his allegations over abuse of power and lack of transparency.

Illum reports that Spiteri has been on a hunger strike since last Monday, as a protest against how, for the second time in a few months, he was moved out from Mount Carmel, where he was receiving care, and placed back in a cell at Corradino as a punishment.

Spiteri is maintaining that the only justification he was given for the transfer was that "a person who is an authority in the country" made a call and gave the order for Spiteri to be moved out of Mount Carmel.

Ilum reports that this 'person of authority' is however still unknown, but goes on to say that it has been intimated to Spiteri that someone implicated him, along with another prisoner, in a potential escape from Mount Carmel.

However Spiter is still insisting that he is innocent of such charges, and argues that his transfer was abusive and based on unfounded suspicions.

He is calling on Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to carry out an inquiry that establishes the facts and to also ensure that disciplinary steps are taken against the person involved.
