Busuttil tours family businesses at Imriehel industrial estate

Opposition leader reiterates government must do more in creating jobs.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil reiterated the need for the government to draft a roadmap for the creation of new jobs.

In comments to the media at Mriehel Industrial , Busuttil underlined the importance of family business in local economy. He said the economy heavily depended on such companies.

“We are interested in seeing our economy registering progress and that is why we have urged government to work on a plan for the creation of employment. This advice was not heeded, even though we offered our co-operation,” Busuttil said.

The Nationalist leader stated that although creation of new jobs remained essential, this did not feature in the pre-budget document launched a couple of weeks ago.

Busuttil was visiting a number of family business situated at the Mriehel industrial estate - accompanied by MPs Ryan Callus, Kristy Debono, and MEP candidate Stefano Mallia - as part of the Party’s activities leading to the Independence celebrations.

“These visits are part of the process for the party to bridge back with certain people and certain sectors,” Busuttil told the companies’ management.

During the visit, the challenges and difficulties companies face were briefly discussed with the opposition leader.

Questioned about the party’s financial crisis, Busuttil said the party’s leadership recognised the hardships that the workers have to suffer, but denied that they were told to forfeit two months’ pay.

“They were asked to postpone the payment until the cash-flow problem is solved, this was done even in the interests of the workers themselves. These are very difficult decisions that need to be taken and should not be politicised.”
