Several prime ministers involved in breach of privilege rulings
In 1992, former prime minister Eddie Fenech Adami asked the speaker to investigate a breach of privilege by opposition leader Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici.
During the past few days, the political sphere was ruffled after Opposition MPs walk stormed out of Chamber after the Speaker's ruling.
Speaker Anglu Farrugia ruled that Busuttil's allegation of "political interference" in the John Dalli case constituted a breach of privilege because the leader of the Opposition failed to substantiate the allegation.
Simon Busuttil said that the Opposition is ready to take case to court and if needs be, the European Court of Human Rights. However, this wasn't the first time that a prime minister asked the speaker to investigate a possible breach of privilege by the opposition leader.
Back in 1992, when Lawrence Gonzi was the Speaker of the House of Representatives, former prime minister Eddie Fenech Adami asked the speaker to investigate a breach of privilege by opposition leader Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici. The case related to an exchange which allegedly took place during a press conference on Wednesday, 7 October 1992. However, the Speaker ruled out that the motion could not be submitted.
In 2008, speaker Louis Galea ruled that Austin Gatt was guilty of case of prima facie breach of privilege against former prime minister Alfred Sant.
